FAQ

Entrant FAQ
  • Can I enter in more than one category?
    • No. You may enter both as an individual and in a group, but only once in each.
  • I just found out about this and it’s after Oct 1, can I still participate?
    • Yep! We’ll accept competitors through Nov 30. You won’t get any more time to complete the challenge and any missed bonus points are gone forever. The fun is in having a new outfit, though!
  • Do I have to make an outfit for myself?
    • Nope! The outfit can be for anyone, but they have to be willing to take the photos you’ll need for the challenge finish.
  • Do I have to be from Calontir to participate?
    • Not at this time. Calontir populace, and groups with at least one Calontiri member, will receive a 10 point bonus for a homefield advantage, but that isn’t an insurmountable advantage. Participants from any kingdom are welcome, but this is for SCA participants only.
  • My prize sponsor/judge is from far away and I want to be able to talk to them, what can I do?
    • One of the few advantages of the pandemic is that we’ve all become far more accustomed to using services like Zoom/Meet/Webex, etc. You can ask if they would mind setting up a short webcall with you, but remember that they are fully within their rights to decline for any reason. Some people aren’t comfortable with the technology. Some people aren’t social. Some people’s lives may be busy. Instead, respect their boundaries and maybe send a nice thank you note instead.
  • I want to participate, but I don’t really want to compete for prizes/points. Can I still play along?
    • Absolutely, as an individual. Groups will compete, but Individuals may enter as display/participation only. We’ll still mass your bonus points, though, to help encourage you along, and we still would like you to update with the competing members. We’ll also ask you to identify your category/level so we know where to place your display page
  • I notice that you’re asking for the highest A&S award, are you snubbing my other awards?
    • Absolutely not! Your Service/Royal/Martial awards are important and wonderful things – but as this competition is entirely based in the arts, those skills are what’s most important. We fully recognize that the skills used in this challenge may not be the same skills you have honed and don’t want you to feel as though we are holding you to a ridiculous standard. We want you to feel free to explore a new experience in the SCA without the pressure.
    • Added note – if you would like your project page to feature your title, however, feel free to include that title or express your orders in your profile paragraph. We’d love to see the diversity of people participating!
  • Can I get reimbursed for the materials I need for my project?
    • We would love to be independently wealthy and support all the projects financially, but, alas, that’s just not the case. You are responsible for procuring your own materials for the project.
  • Why are you asking for my pronouns?
    • We understand that a person’s name or appearance may not match their preferred self-identification. We may need to tweak your profile to a third person voice or otherwise speak about you and we would prefer to respect your identity. You, of course, can choose to not provide pronouns and we will default to using they/them when necessary.
  • Why do I have to sign a photographer/model release?
    • The answer is two-fold. First, while this is an unofficial SCA page, we feel that following the spirit of the rules are important. As such, having the signed releases allows us to follow the spirit.
    • The other reason is that we would also like to use this project to help our chatelaines. While we’re having fun at events, it can be hard to get good pictures of the work we put into crafts. We’d very much like to allow the pictures, especially the final ones, to be available for use in recruitment efforts around the kingdom.
  • I’m a Laurel, but my skills aren’t in costuming or sewing, can I enter as a beginner?
    • You may enter at any level you feel is appropriate*.
    • *Additional commentary on the subject from Kristine Nic Tallier, OL and current KMoAS of Calontir : I would encourage you to pick the level most appropriate from an objective standpoint. Though your particular skill may not be what you’re using to construct garments, your research and general crafting skills will allow you to analyze and complete the challenge more easily than a true beginner completing one of their first garments. The vast majority of active Laurels should be able to achieve at least an Intermediate level.
  • Do I have to do all the layers to be part of this?
    • Yes and no. To be an official part of the challenge, and to be recognized as a finisher, you must complete all four parts of the challenge. If you don’t think you can get all of it done, you can look for a group to join, where you all can take part of the challenge and complete it.
    • If that doesn’t work, there’s no reason why you can’t join the Facebook group and post pictures of what you have been able to get done, nor a reason why you couldn’t use the twitter or Instagram hashtag to celebrate what you’ve completed. The challenge is for those who would like a whole new outfit by the end of this, but we’d love to have you participate however you are able.
  • The IRCC is Italian Renaissance only – is this also limited by time frame/culture?
    • Not at all! All SCA time periods and cultures are welcome. The only time it would matter is if someone sponsors an extra prize for a specific time period/culture
  • Will there be another challenge this spring?
    • At this time we only plan to have this one-time challenge. This is being done specifically due to the pandemic and, hopefully, science will prevail and we’ll be returning to normal this spring. In the event the pandemic continues longer than we fear… well…. Ask us then, but the nature of the challenge at that point would likely be different. If this challenge speaks to you, join in now.
  • Can I enter my outfit/accessories into Queen’s Prize/Kingdom A&S (or my kingdom’s equivalent A&S tournament?)
    • We can only answer this one for Calontir – and the answer is that you sure can!! The C3 challenge isn’t a Crown Recognized major A&S event, so your completed project is available to be entered in the next major Kingdom tourney. If you live outside of Calontir, check your tourney rules or contact your appropriate officer to clarify.
  • You said I could create more than one accessory. How does that work? Is there a limit?
    • There is no limit to how many ‘accessories’ you can make, HOWEVER, only one will be actively judged. Pick the project you feel is the strongest. For the others, you can upload close-ups of all the additional projects but be aware that they MUST appear in one of the two final pictures to be counted. We’ll ask you to list which items in the final pictures you have made during the challenge time period. Judges will be instructed to add points for those pieces as long as they make sense in the picture you’re creating. We don’t just want you to make stuff because you can, we want you to make pieces which help your picture to tell the story.
  • Do I have to write documentation for the challenge?
    • Yes and no. We’re not asking for traditional “documentation,” though we do ask that you give us a couple written paragraphs about your production methods/inspirations. More formal Documentation will not be judged or given extra points, but it could help explain if you have a particularly wacky addition to your project, especially in the Historic category. It’s entirely up to you!
Judging FAQ
  • I’m planning on entering, can I also judge?
    • Sure thing! We can make sure you’re not judging in the same category you’re competing in
  • Do I have to be from Calontir to Judge?
    • Absolutely not! The beauty of this virtual competition is that we can judge from anywhere.
  • Will judging be live or using a video chat service like Zoom/Webex/Meet?
    • We’re still working out the particulars, but at the moment we’re leaning towards judging being entirely on the pictures and information provided. If certain entrants would like feedback sessions, we’ll see about getting people together via Zoom (if they aren’t able to meet face-to-face by then) but only if both the Judge and the Entrant are amenable.
Sponsor FAQ
  • Can I sponsor a winner for anything?
    • Yes and No. We’d like to hear your ideas, but we reserve the right to decline or ask you to tweak your challenge theme for any reason we choose.
  • I don’t have anything specific I want to sponsor – but I want to contribute, what can I do?
    • We are happy to take contributions to the main prizes, too! We’re working on what we can give out, but if you’d like to offer something to the prize hoard, contact us and we’ll work out the logistics of getting it here.
  • Do I have to be from Calontir to sponsor a prize?
    • Absolutely not! Just remember that you are responsible for getting the prize to the recipient. You can mail, send by SCA express, or offer a digital prize which is easy for anyone to receive.
  • My recipient is from far away and I won’t see them in person. Will you reimburse me for shipping?
    • Sorry, no. We don’t have any kind of budget for that. If you sponsor a prize, remember that you are responsible for figuring out how to get it to your recipient.
  • My recipient is from far away and I want to be able to talk to them, what can I do?
    • One of the few advantages of the pandemic is that we’ve all become far more accustomed to using services like Zoom/Meet/Webex, etc. You can ask if they would mind setting up a short webcall with you, but remember that they are fully within their rights to decline for any reason. Some people aren’t comfortable with the technology. Some people aren’t social. Some people’s lives may be busy. Instead, respect their boundaries and maybe send a nice letter with the prize instead.
