About Safiyya: I have been in the SCA since 1995 (25 years). I joined when I was 17 in Dark River. I first learned to sew when I joined the SCA. I am by no means an expert but I have learned so much over the years. I want to bag line my silk Joba, which is something I have never done. I also want to make my own jewelry since I am a metalsmith in mundane life. I am also a scribe in the SCA and love painting scrolls and illuminations. This project will be very challenging for me. I tend to be afraid of challenges so I wind up not doing them or giving up. But I keep saying I need to do more SCA projects and stay motivated, so this is the perfect opportunity!
Her project: I will be creating a complete noble woman’s Safavid Persian ensemble, late 16th century. I am drawing inspiration from several Safavid Persian miniature paintings. I plan to make a pirihan and salwar pants as my first layer, a Qaba as the second, a Joba as the third and several accessories such as a braid case, carqhad and jewelry as my fourth layer. I have been wanting to make salwar pants with a diagonal stripe, cut on the bias, for quite some time. I plan to make my Joba in silk as I have not yet worked with silk other than for a braid case. This challenge will help motivate to try and make pieces I have always wanted.
